Some bands struggle for ideas. Some bands just straight up copy others. Some bands lack conviction and some bands should never have bothered in the first place. Thankfully Birmingham's latest and loudest three-piece SHAPES fall into a completely separate category, one marked 'Some bands will make you fill your pants with excitement'.
The noisy Brummies have honed their sound to dramatically tight effect taking influences from These Arms Are Snakes, The Mars Volta and dearly departed former label mates Meet Me In St Louis and have managed to create a record so fresh yet intricately elaborate with what feels like a hell-bent passion for making music. 'The Pasture, The Oil’ is the follow-up to 2008's debut self-released EP ‘Get Yer Learn On’ which showed signs of masterful musicianship and brilliant song-writing well exceeding their short lifespan. It's no wonder this lead to them being picked up by Big Scary Monsters, the UK’s reference point for challenging new music.
Recorded by Nick Finnish (Johnny Truant, Youves, Blakfish) and mastered by Alan Douches (Mastodon, Dillinger Escape Plan, Fall Out Boy) in New Jersey, the record wraps around your ears and delivers fresh punches of British alt-punk right from the very first bridge in opening stormer, 'Trampled By A Horse' through to the haunting, violin-serenaded Apocalypse soundtrack end of 'You Butcher'. New and exciting, SHAPES will steal your heart and tear it to shreds without a second thought.
'The Pasture, The Oil' will be released on 4th May via Big Scary Monsters Records and the band will be on tour throughout May, including an appearance at The Great Escape festival.
