According to a popular internet information source, Birmingham was regarded as “the workshop of the world’ during the industrial revolution. This phrase encapsulates everything for new boys on the block, BLAKFISH. Armed with a factory full of machine gun riffs, blood curdling melodies and a touring ethic which has seen them take in every road ever built in the UK, closely followed by Europe, these four young Brummies seem intent on creating a new revolution rock for the masses.
Having been playing together for over 10 years, and still barely in their 20s, their dedication to the cause is certainly not in question. With each stride taken thus far, BLAKFISH have made themselves sound braver and bolder, this being a testament to their raw, blood dripping ambition to push 'heavy' music over the familiar boundaries.
Latest offering, ‘See You In Another City’, is close to what you may find when you’ve blended all your favourite ingredients, and indeed guilty pleasures, into one very large concoction. Its schizophrenic nature and pop sensibilities intertwine with each other throughout the record. The pummeling drums, catchy vocal hooks and barrage of time signature-chopping guitars feel somewhat strangely comforting, with an energy to match US titans such as The Blood Brothers, The Fall of Troy and Converge.
With Jason Willcock (Reuben, Ghost Of A Thousand, You Me At Six) at the helm, they have created a record well beyond their young years. A live show with more meandering paths and moods than this band will be hard to find. Hardworking yet fresh-faced is what makes these “energetic punk-stompers” (as the Guardian so astutely described them) such a welcome and exciting inclusion in the UK alternative scene. Jump aboard now, and sail into the frenetic, sea-sickening waters of ‘See You In Another City’. It’ll eat you alive.
BLAKFISH are set to take on a mammoth tour with NME faves, Tubelord, throughout August and September. Their EP ‘See You In Another City’ is released via Big Scary Monsters Records on 28th July, followed by their debut album in Spring 2009
