Having just released their debut EP via Alcopop Records, Screaming Maldini offer us this exclusive, previously unreleased track, along with a few words...

I've already asked you this, but for those who weren't in the pub that day, where does the name come from?
It's been around for a lot longer than the music has. About five or six years ago, after a late night discussion brainstorming possible names for a band I had just started at the time - someone just happened to say "Maldini". It immediately struck me as a beautiful word which rolled off the tongue really nicely and it's stuck with ever since. Around the same time - probably whilst watching that episode of The Simpsons with "Flamin' Moes" in it - I decided that I really liked the idea of prefixing Maldini with a suitable adverb. Oh yes!

How long has Screaming Maldini been going and what lead you to forming the band?
We played our first gig in June last year, but we had been going as a purely studio concern for a few months before that. I suppose it was born out of my growing frustration with being in a purely guitars-bass-drums band and also provided an outlet for my spiralling-ever-more-horribly-out-of-control obsession with recording and production of music.
I fancied packing some different sounds into songs, so I hit upon the idea of choirs and trumpets and percussion and stuff and it all seemed to just work. We recorded a couple of tracks with just tom on drums, andy on trumpet, sheffield Cathedral girls choir on backing vox, and me filling in the rest. We got a fair bit of positive attention from the blogs and decided to play it live. Three became six, 'one or two songs' became 'some songs', Alcopop Records came along, and here we are!

Your EP is soon to be released through the wonderful (yes I'm biased) Alcopop Records and you'll soon be heading out on a couple of label sponsored tours. Are you looking forward to it all?
Truth be told, we are really excited actually and we are all itching to get going. We've stuck to a "quality over quantity" approach when it's come to gigging and have consequently only played four shows thus far. All of which have been stonkers, mind! To all of a sudden be playing five on the bounce is a thrilling prospect and we're all very very excited and equally well rehearsed! We can't wait to get the EP out either we're massively proud of the songs and equally so of the artwork. This has been done by a graphic designer called Ralph Wilson (of Gulp!) who has created an original bit of packaging which really reflects and complements the music held within. I believe it's truly eclectic listen and I hope that everyone will try it out at least once :)

What are your plans for the rest of 2010?
We hope to continue reaching more and more people. We're going to keep on gigging and writing, hopefully play a few festivals over the summer and have something resembling an album by the second half of the year. Very exciting times!!
